The Journey to The Patriot

The Patriot was born from the land. The 2-year development created tough challenges for the finest golf construction company, Landscapes Unlimited. They traversed four often hostile topographies – lowland marsh, heavy woodlands, high prairie, and limestone canyons. The rock-laden terrain required importing 10-inches of sandy-loam top soil. Irrigation literally carved into the land through limestone.

Eventually, 80 acres of sod enlivened the enormous Meyer Zoysia fairways. With no rough, the fairways flow like harbor, providing safe havens from nature’s fury. The tees and greens lay gently atop organic contours. Fanatical in our commitment to beautiful greens, we selected A1-A4 Bent, a sub-terrain moisture control system and turf breeze fans. Brilliant, beach-white sand bunkers dot The Patriot, providing a striking contrast to lush green zoysia.

Finally, a meticulous blend of grasses, soil preparation, and sophisticated drainage insure firm, fast surfaces. Ground game is integral to The Patriot, taking the player back to golf's sacred Scottish origins.

The Patriot. Of the Earth, for the Spirit.

The Patriot was designed by preeminent golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. In a career spanning four decades, Jones Jr. has designed more than 245 golf courses in over 40 countries on six continents – with a stunning 33 courses among Golf Digest's Best Courses in 18 nations. This includes the #1 course in 10 nations, and 28 courses in the top 10.

Over a two-year period, The Patriot was born of the earth. The diversity of the terrain is unique, awe-inspiring – indeed spiritual. Views that stretch 30-miles, virgin forests, jagged limestone walls that climb to heights of 150-feet. It traverses through four distinct and sometimes hostile topographies: lowland marsh, heavy woodlands, high prairie, and dramatic limestone canyons.

Jones listened intently to the land, like a father listens to his young child. He patiently and gently uncovered a golf experience like no other.

"The Patriot provided the canvas and my job was to discover her secrets and reveal them. I tried to design a golf course that will fascinate people so they'll want to play it many times and learn the depths and meanings of The Patriot's story, her subtext, her poetry. The Patriot truly is of the earth...for the spirit."
